As the festive season rolls in, the world of advertising transforms into a wonderland of creativity and emotion. Christmas ads have become more than just commercials; they are storytelling masterpieces that capture the spirit of the season. And now that we are in December, we actually feel ready to share them with you – they just hit differently mid-December than on the first of November.

The Christmas ads that made waves in 2023

In 2023, brands have outdone themselves, creating ads that not only promote their products but also spread messages of love, joy, and togetherness. From tear-jerking narratives to fun-filled escapades, join us as we unwrap the best Christmas adverts of the year, each brimming with festive cheer and artistic flair.

The Ad That We Are Still Puzzled About: The Enigmatic John Lewis AT

Each year, the anticipation for John Lewis’s Christmas ad reaches almost fever pitch, setting the bar for holiday advertising. Strangely, this season’s offering didn’t make the usual splash on my LinkedIn feed. Instead, I found myself actively seeking it out after catching a glimpse of a spoof on ‘The Last Leg’.

Titled “Snapper: The Perfect Tree,” crafted by Saatchi & Saatchi in their debut for John Lewis after taking over the account this year, the ad presents a narrative that left me with more questions than answers. From the storyline to the song selection, there seems to be an elusive depth waiting to be unraveled. Despite the lingering questions, it’s a must-watch. Perhaps, somewhere hidden in the Venus flytraps, lies a deeper, thought-provoking meaning.

The Future Award Contender: A Nod to Youth Culture by JD Sports

Uncommon Creative Studio has been turning heads this year with its string of inventive, fresh, and bold campaigns. True to form, their Christmas advert for JD Sports is no exception. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of JD Sports’ iconic yellow duffle bag, a symbol woven into the fabric of UK youth culture, this ad strikes a different chord.

Titled “The Bag for Life,” the campaign shifts away from traditional holiday tropes. Instead, it injects a dose of realism, reflecting the diverse and authentic experiences of Christmas in the UK today. By embracing the true spirit of the season through the eyes of its youthful audience, Uncommon has crafted a narrative that resonates deeply with cultural relevance.

This isn’t just another festive ad; it’s a homage to a generation and a celebration of an enduring icon in youth culture. As we look ahead, it’s easy to predict that the judges will be captivated by the authenticity and cultural significance woven through this piece.

Amazon's Heartwarming Holiday Ad: A Snowy Joy Ride and LinkedIn Hit

Amazon’s festive offering this year became a sensation, especially within the ad and marketing industry circles on LinkedIn (yes, this is a personal observation on my LinkedIn feed, but it seems I’m not alone). Titled “Joy Ride” and created by Amazon, this ad hits all the right notes with a story that’s both subtle and poignant.

The narrative revolves around a group of elderly ladies who recapture their childhood joy through a snowy adventure. Thanks to Amazon’s quick delivery service, they can easily access everything they need for a thrilling sleigh ride down a hill. This ad isn’t just about showcasing products; it’s about the joy and freedom that Amazon’s service can bring to people of all ages.

Unlike some other ads where the brand connection feels forced or obscure (I’m still puzzling over that Venus flytrap in the John Lewis ad), Amazon’s “Joy Ride” makes a crystal-clear connection between its heartwarming tale and the brand’s promise of delivering anything you can dream of, quickly and efficiently.

It’s a masterclass in subtlety, storytelling, and brand relevance. A perfect blend of seasonal cheer and a gentle reminder of the vast universe of possibilities that Amazon opens up.

The Ad That Has The Best Strut: Capital One's Saturday Night Santa

When it comes to adding a dash of dance to the holiday season, Capital One’s “Holiday Night Fever” hits all the right notes. This ad, a personal favorite, takes the idea of a dancing Santa to a whole new level of cool, featuring none other than John Travolta, the quintessential ‘Saturday Night’ icon.

In this vibrant spot created by GSD&M for Capital One’s Quicksilver credit card, we see Travolta donning the Santa suit and strutting through the streets of New York. As the Bee Gees’ timeless track sets the rhythm, Travolta proves he’s still a master of the dance floor, charming viewers and rekindling memories of his legendary “Saturday Night Fever” days.

This isn’t just an ad; it’s a throwback celebration, replete with the charm and charisma that Travolta brought to “Saturday Night Fever.” Watching him glide through the city with those iconic moves is a delight, especially for fans of the classic film.

Here’s a fun challenge – as you watch, see if you can spot the subtle nods and Easter eggs referencing the movie. It’s not just a commercial; it’s a mini-revival of a cinematic icon!

The Magical Animal Tale: Lidl's Sends A Raccoon On A Quest

This year, Lidl captures the essence of the festive spirit in a way that’s both touching and timely. Awarded the unofficial title of “Best Use of (totally cruelty-free, because, well, animated) Animal in a Christmas Ad,” their campaign strikes a chord with its charming storytelling.

Centered around an endearing animated raccoon, Lidl’s ad, aptly titled “A Magical Christmas,” navigates the theme of small yet impactful gestures. In a year dominated by the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, the story unfolds with the raccoon going on a heartwarming mission to rescue a little boy’s lost cuddly toy.

But Lidl didn’t just stop at storytelling. Echoing the ad’s message, they’re turning fiction into action by encouraging customers to donate unopened gifts at their stores. These donations are destined for children in need within local communities, making the ad’s sentiment resonate even more profoundly. Lidl certainly knows how to blend magic with meaning, making their ad a standout this Christmas.

So, did this adorable raccoon’s adventure tug at your heartstrings as much as it did ours?

Biggest Christmas Ad Comeback of 2023: Bouygues' Dancing Dad

Sometimes, the charm of a Christmas ad is so timeless it earns an encore. This year, the most remarkable comeback wasn’t a new ad but a delightful gem from France, originally aired in 2018. Its frequent appearance had many, including myself, mistakenly believing it was part of this year’s festive line-up.

Kudos to Bouygues Telecom and BETC for creating “Unforgettable Christmas,” an ad that has proven its enduring appeal. The ad features a heartwarming portrayal of a dad who loves to dance – a simple yet touching narrative that transcends time.

This ad’s revival in 2023 serves as a testament to its lasting impact. It’s a reminder that some stories, especially those shared during the holiday season, have the power to resonate year after year.
